'Paws for Literacy®'
Visits Elora Branch Library On November 6, 2010, our "Paws for Literacy"® programme went on a road trip to bring the joy of reading through the encouragement of our specially pre-screened and trained "Literacy Assistance Dogs" to children in the Elora, Ontario area. This was our eighth event since the programme began two years ago. For two hours between 1PM and 3PM, seven of our volunteer dog/handler teams worked with 21 school aged children between the ages of 6 and 12 to promote the love of reading while exposing them to our special K9 friends. We are grateful for the assistance of the staff at the Elora Branch of the Wellington County Library, Ms Sheri Cockerill and Ms Bonnie Moebus. Without their help in both promoting the event to the parents as well as setting up the scheduling, it would be nearly impossible to pull off such a successful event. Our next "Paws for Literacy"® date (the 9th such event - marking the two year anniversary) is scheduled to take place at the Marden branch of the Wellington County Library on January 29, 2011 as part of our plan to rotate this volunteer, community-based event across Wellington County. For more information on this initiative, please click here. For more information on our upcoming Marden date, please e-mail Ms. Trudy Gohn at trudyg@county.wellington.on.ca or call the Marden branch: 519-763-7445. Below is a representative sample of some 'special' moments between the children and our Literacy Assistance Dogs during the Elora event.
